A/Professor William Huynh graduated from University of NSW in 2001 after completing the combined Science and Medicine Course, and then completed his specialist training in Neurology in 2009 with a subspecialization in Neurophysiology. He completed his PhD in 2013 that investigated the mechanisms of neuroplasticity following stroke in human patients. His research encompasses the use of novel techniques such as paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to specifically assess the intracortical inhibitory and excitatory networks of the brain, as well as peripheral nerve excitability studies that provide information on biophysical properties of axons (ion channels, membrane potential etc). His research has been awarded the NHMRC postgraduate medical scholarship, as well as the James Lance Young Investigator of the year in 2011 for the best platform presentation at the Australia & New Zealand Association of Neurologists' Annual Scientific Meeting.

Dr Huynh has established a strong track record in medical research and has completed two post-doctoral fellowships at University of Sydney in affiliation with the Forefront Motor Neuron Disease Clinic at the Brain and Mind Centre. Dr Huynh has authored over 70 publications with a majority being either first or senior author, in international peer reviewed journals as well as 15 published conference abstracts and 5 book chapters in well-respected international textbooks including the Oxford textbook series. Dr Huynh has been involved in over 25 clinical research trials in motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis, chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's dementia.

Dr Huynh holds a Clinical Associate Professor title with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Research Collective at the University of Sydney, as well as Conjoint Associate Professor at the University of NSW Medicine and Health Randwick Clinical Campus, and heavily involved with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as development of the medical curriculum. Dr Huynh is currently an associate editor for the international peer reviewed journal "Frontiers in Neurology".

Dr Huynh is also a consultant neurologist and clinical neurophysiologist at the Prince of Wales Hospital. He runs a weekly nerve conduction study and EMG clinic at the hospital, and to date, has supervised over 10 training neurologists undertaking their final elective fellowship year in clinical neurophysiology as part of the FRACP program in Neurology.

His areas of practice encompasses general neurology that include disorders such as headache and migraine, Parkinson's disease, peripheral neuropathy and epilepsy with a particular interest in clinical neurophysiology, stroke, MND/ALS, as well as peripheral neuromuscular disorders such as acquired and inflammatory/immune-mediated neuropathies.
